Welcome to Darwin Interiors
David Hughes began his career training to be a tree surgeon in Guilford and at 17 became the youngest person ever to become qualified. From there, he spent half a decade working as a tree surgeon and landscaper before starting his own company in South Wales.
West Coast Sawmills was a business that focused on the extraction of windblown timber mainly oak, that David milled and carved to create beautifully unique pieces of furniture for people’s homes. He created mirrors, tables, and other joinery pieces, for customers who wanted something organic and natural in their homes that had been created just for them. Because of the nature of working with windblown timber, this method of furniture creation was very sustainable and eco-friendly.
“I love working in the forest there is nothing like it in the world; it’s such an escape from modern life so therapeutic and addictive, you can just drive out with your dog and enjoy a cup of tea in the woods with no one else around,” David explained.
“The beauty of working for myself, I only have to take work that is creative and inspires me. There is something very grounding about working with wood and I want to keep that natural, organic feel with all my work. People need to feel something when they look at your work, I don’t want to just make generic off the shelf pieces, I select unique timber to make one-of-kind-furniture. “People should feel happy, inspired, intrigued and entertained when they look at my creations, I would never want to use these stunning materials to create something run-of-the-mill!" said David.
